Toronto

Michelle and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary on June 27th 2022.  We started dating our senior year in high school so we have been together for  36 years!  As we slowly have started to do more as the pandemic thankfully slowed down we decided we really needed to travel somewhere.  We considered heading back to the west coast and visiting northern California coastal state parks as well as the coast of southern Oregon.  We have traveled the other parts of Highway 1 on the coast and I love traveling that road – the PCH drive has a certain magic to it for me.  But we may have some other larger travel plans coming up yet this year and air travel is having issues with keeping schedules and rising prices so we decided to drive somewhere.  I struggled to think of an interesting place to see within driving distance when I think it was Michelle who suggested “How about Toronto?”.  I don’t think I would have ever thought to drive up there from here in Ohio – not sure why but I would not have.  As it turns out it was a great idea!

Only a 7 hour drive from my home and what a fantastic city. We stayed downtown right across from what is now called the Rogers Centre but what I had always known as The SkyDome growing up.  Right on the other side of the Rogers Centre is the CN Tower.  I devoted a whole gallery on this site to the CN Tower – truly an impressive structure that dominates the Toronto skyline.

I am still dealing with my ongoing health issues so I had to convince myself that I could handle this trip.  As it turns out I did fairly well and I am very thankful for that.

I found Toronto to be a very clean and walkable city.  We walked everywhere we went even though the public transportation appeared easy to use.

I really enjoyed the business district with its beautiful high rise sky scrapers and the shining glass high rise residential buildings. But as I read about the details of the heights of these buildings it made me realize just how massive New York City is in terms of quantity of buildings and the number of them that are so tall and iconic.   (Looking forward to getting back there in the next year or two).

I usually like to mention our coffee stops.  We found Boxcar Social Harbourfront our first day and we returned almost every morning.  The lattes were great and their danishes were incredible (almost but not quite as good as our own Fox in the Snow here in Columbus).  We also enjoyed Dineen Coffee Company as a source of several afternoon drinks to further power our explorations.

In the end Michelle and I had a great and much needed getaway.  30 years of marriage and 36 years as a couple sure have gone by very quickly – as is the theme of my thoughts and different comments on this site – don’t waste your days and value your health.  If you have your health and an interest in traveling, make the time to do so with people you care about whether that be family, friends or both.  I think you will be glad you did.
