Apopular destination to the North of town which I understand is the highest point in the city. Montmartre is primarily known for its artistic history and the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur on its summit. We took the metro to the Abbesses station. I did not mention to Michelle it is the deepest metro station in Paris at 118 feet underground! So the legs were burning at the top of those almost 12 flights of stairs and when you exit you are just at the base of the actual hill where you start the trek up to the Sacre-Coeur. There were many steps and hills to climb and if you watch the little video I posted there is a Montmartre Funicular which is like an inclined elevator car to take you up.
We enjoyed the view and then went into the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre. I thought I had read that you could not take pictures inside but thankfully that turned out to not be the case. The interior of the Basilica was breathtaking. It was constructed in 1919.
We descended down a different way through where the street artists all set up to paint portraits and other scenic Paris paintings.
In general we enjoyed the artsy vibe of Montmartre.
