The Berlin Cathedral was a magnificent introduction to cathedrals in Europe for me. It was unfortunately under construction on the exterior which took away slightly from its beautiful appearance. As you can see in the pictures the interior is massive and breathtaking as are the views from the dome! We climbed many and I mean MANY steps to work our way to the top of the dome where you can then go outside and see 360 degree views. Well worth doing that if you ever visit.
The initial version of the church was built in 1451. The current building is the fourth version inaugurated in 1905. At 374 ft long, 240 ft wide and 381 ft tall, it was much larger than any of the previous buildings and was considered a Protestant counterweight to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
The pipe organ has 7,269 pipes! What I would have given to take my grandma there to see it – she was an exceptional pipe organist herself!
