Latourell Falls was our first hiking and waterfall stop the first morning we ventured out in Portland. I hope the pictures convey how great this area was. The forests and moss on the trees here is exactly what I think of when I think of a “lush” Pacific Northwest forest. After hiking a little while we came close to the falls and it was really something. The water was pouring over these 249 feet high falls. I love the picture on this page of my son Nick who scrambled up the rocks in front of the falls while his brother and sister take his picture. Nick did not post much on Instagram but the picture they were taking of him he did post. I love and miss him so much.
When you look closely behind the falls you will see what look like rods of rock – those are actually basalt columns. I came to learn that these falls are unique to some degree as it is a straight drop fall from a hanging basalt cliff where as most of the falls in this area tumble down to some degree – even Multnomah Falls. The hike was a relatively easy 2.1 mile loop trail.
