One of the highlights and most popular aspects of Zion is taking the Zion Narrows River hike. You walk right off the end of the River side walk and into the water to literally hike upstream in the Virgin river. But, this hike is only open when the rate of water flow in the river is below a certain safe threshold for a period of at least 24 hours. Prior to us arriving their had been substantial snow fall and thus the water was flowing a little too strong. On our last day though we were fortunate in that the river flow had lowered enough to open the trail. We got started a little late (ideally we would have started early to mid morning) but we rented our wet suits and boots and started the hike. At first Brett and I were worried that Michelle would never make it through the water. There are large, mini bowling ball size rocks under there and it can make things slippery! You can see pictures of us on the hike below. The further you hike, the narrower the canyon becomes and the walls climb straight up! The height of the canyon walls at places reach 1,000 feet tall and the width only 20-30 feet. Think about that, 1,000 feet tall – the Empire State building tall!
We unfortunately had to turn back earlier than we wanted because we wanted to make sure to get back to the trail head before it became dark in the canyon. So we have another reason to return and go further up the canyon for this hike.
